Sudanese Billionaire's Promise to Kenyan Students Raises Questions

Lual Malong Yor Jr, a flamboyant South Sudanese national, on Tuesday is said to have promised a chopper to the Kenya University Students' Organisation (KUSO) in a presser at the Serana Hotel.

A video of the presser was widely circulated in which Yor addressed the media stating that he would show support for the students' umbrella body with the generous contribution.

In the video, student leaders broke out in chants as they hailed the wealthy man mentioning, "Our new chopper is coming".

"I will stand with KUSO and I will invest a lot of dollars in KUSO. I love the youth and I will support the youth. I'm looking forward to seeing the youth change this country," Yor declared.

Here is the video of Yor with the student leaders.

The video sparked questions on what had motivated the move as many commentators took the move to be an insult.

The Evening Post, however, established that the video was merely a publicity stunt involving students who were excited to meet the social media celebrity in person.

"Malong Yor just happened to be at the hotel as we were conducting our official duties as KUSO. We were swearing in some of our members and that is why the podium was there.

"It is not true that he promised us a chopper, the video was recorded by some of the students who were excited to meet the man," KUSO President Anthony Munyaka explained.

Malong Yor Jr came to public light after he posted a video of himself on a bed covered with $100 notes amounting to $1 Billion.

Due to the name shared with the former South Sudan Chief of General Staff, General Paul Malong, many assumed that the two were father and son.

In an interview with Citizen TV, however, Malong Yor and the general both denied being related in any way.

When questioned about the source of his apparent vast wealth, Yor failed to give details only stating that he is "blessed".

He went on to flaunt his gold watch valued at Ksh10 Million and diamond encrusted shoes valued at Ksh1 Million a pair.

Yor further described that he has been living as a resident in the presidential suite of a luxury hotel in Nairobi where the cost per night is $2,500.
