Justice Jessie Lessit withdraws from Maribe, Irungu case

High Court criminal Judge Jessie Lessit, the jurist presiding over the murder trial of the two lover birds Jacqueline Maribe and her fiancé Joseph Irungu has withdrawn from the case.


High Court Judge Jessie Lessit, has withdrawn from presiding over the murder case of Monica Kimani where Tv anchor Jacque Maribe and her fiancé Joseph Irungu are the suspects.

On Monday morning, Justice Lessit withdrew from the case and directed that the matter be mentioned on Wednesday, October 17 before another judge who will then set a different date for the hearing of the two suspects' bail application.

“Joseph Kuria Irungu and Jacque Maribe at an unknown time at Lamuria Gardens apartments on Kitale Lane, off Denis Pritt Road in Kilimani area within Nairobi County you are jointly charged with the murder of Monica Kimani,” judge Lesiit read out the charge.
The two however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

More days in remand

They two will now remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of their bail. Maribe will continue to be detained at the Lang’ata Women’s Prison while Jowie remains at the Industrial Area Remand Prison.
Ms Maribe's lawyer, Katwa Kigen, had requested the court to expedite the mention of the case, on the basis that the suspects have been in custody for too long.

Mr Irungu, who is the main suspect in the case, was arrested on September 24, while his fiancé Ms. Maribe was arrested five days later.
The slain businesswoman Ms. Kimani was killed on the night of September 19, hours after arriving in Nairobi from South Sudan where she was managing a family business.
