Ugandan Baby Arrested By Police For Possessing Banned Cosmetics

Police have arrested a smuggler at the Democratic Republic of Congo border with a ‘baby’ full of banned cosmetics.
The ‘baby’ was intercepted aboard a bus at the DRC border in Mpondwe as it was entering Uganda. Officials at the border discovered the child to be a dummy full of banned cosmetics.
Custom Commissioner of Uganda, Dicksons Kateshumbwa, confirmed the incident on his Twitter page citing that smugglers never cease to amuse him.
Skin lightening products that have been banned in Uganda always find their way into the East African country through the DRC border.
The products were banned in 2016 after it was discovered that they contain mercury and hydroquinone which are linked to damaging health side-effects.
Mpondwe border station reported having impounded more than 2000 boxes of banned cosmetics in 2017 alone. The cosmetics are usually concealed in sacks of green bananas, and plastic jerry cans with false bottoms that are cut and sewn up.
