Forces are evidently ganging up as they look forward to engaging their opponents in regards to the nearing 2022 vote. With two years ahead, players are already taking positions.
The latest to be clear is Machakos County governor Dr.Alfred Mutua who declared his plans to run for presidency come 2022. Dr.Mutua dared to go against the odds to challenge his region’s perceived kingpin Kalonzo Musyoka who is yet not clear whether he will contest for the top seat or, as it were, back another candidate.
Mutua will be running on his Maendeleo Chap Chap ticket and now says former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has offered to support him. This was revealed when the governor appeared for K24’s Punchline on Sunday night where he told the host Ann Kiguta he will have Raila on his back.
“I have already explained that to Raila Odinga when I visited him at his Upper Hill offices. I told him I am contesting for the office and it is time he hands me the baton. We will support each other’s dreams. He will support my dream.” Mutua said.
The governor was however clear on what and how he will support Raila. On why he would not support Kalonzo Musyoka, Mutua felt the Wiper Party leader had done much in the capacities he served and it was time he left the helm of Ukambani politics to some other worthy leader.
“I would like to say Kalonzo is a respectful man. He is a man I hold in a high ideal and he should be respected. He has done what he has even though not much. He served well and now it is time that another leader continues the job.” Mutua added.
The governor could not leave out the issue of his intimidation by the Deputy President and some of his allies. He affirmed the Parliament Majority Leader Aden Duale and his Senate counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen had threatened him on some occasions at State House.
“They were threatening me. They were telling me ‘you’ve been out there talking about us, we must deal with you.’….” Mutua said.
It is now for the ODM leader Raila Odinga to be out and confirm whether he will back the governor, or he got his own ambitions.
