Thika is an industrial town located in Kiambu County, approximately 42 kilometres from Nairobi. It is home to several manufacturing and agricultural processing companies like Delmonte and Bidco oil refineries. Over the years, the rate of prostitution in Thika town has tremendously increased. It is estimated that there are over 500 twilight girls who ply their trade in Thika town. A majority are believed to be students at local institutions located within the town. Prostitution has become a 24 hr economy in this industrial town. Some brothels operate on a 24 hr basis. However, a majority of the daytime prostitutes are usually middle-aged women. When night falls, a different breed of young and skimpily dressed ‘nurses’ take over the streets.
There are two famous brothels in Thika town that have been in existence for years. These brothels include;
Sky Motel
It is one of the most popular and oldest brothels in Thika. It is located along Uhuru Street Roundabout. Prostitutes here offer their services on a 24-hour basis. With as low as 250 shillings, you can easily satisfy your desires. Rooms at this brothel go for just 100 shillings, while the twilight girls charge 150 shillings.
Rwambogo
It is a popular bar and restaurant located on Uhuru Street. It is another joint that is usually frequented by cheap prostitutes. Here rooms go for 150 shillings for a ‘quick service’. However, this place does not operate on a 24 hr basis. The Twilight girls can only be found when night falls. This joint is mostly frequented by ‘senior citizens’, by that I mean old men who visit the place to squander their retirement benefits and packages.
Sky motel and Rwambogo are the only famous brothels located in Thika town. that provide affordable grounds for the prostitutes to offer their sexual healings. Other places like sunset and brilliant bars are frequented by prostitutes who roam around just to make a killing. They, however, don’t have specific lodgings that favour the booming business.
