Nakuru police boss bans night parties during Christmas holiday to curb crime

Residents of Nakuru county will be compelled to spend the entire December holiday nights within the precincts of their homes after police boss banned night parties and social gatherings.

County Police Commander Stephen Matu said the directive is aimed at curbing insecurity cases which he noted have been on the rise in the recent past.

Matu who addressed the press in Nakuru on Wednesday, December 11, said his officers will be dispatched across the county to ensure the directive is adhered to and those found breaching it arrested and charged.

"We have decided to indefinitely ban night meetings and parties in Nakuru. We will lift the directive sometime in January 2020,” Matu told K24.

According to the directive, no one will be allowed to party or hold a social gathering or an entertaining event between 6pm and 6am.

The police boss cited a recent incident where a group of rowdy youths attacked and injured residents in Nakuru town after being denied entry to Nakuru Athletic Club where a beer promotion event was being held as one of the reasons for the ban.

He said the county had previously witnessed a tendency of unruly youths and gangsters seizing opportunity of such events to attack and rob innocent citizens hence the precautionary measure.

While the directive was received well with a number of residents, some, particularly revellers, rebuked it terming it punitive and untimely.
