Two sisters were doused with petrol and set on fire by a police officer in a case of love gone sour on Saturday night.
Doctors at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, where the two are recuperating, yesterday said both women are in a stable condition.
Phanice Nyabaro, 27, sustained 18 per cent burns while Ruth Nyabaro, 17, sustained eight per cent burns.
According to the hospital’s head of clinician services, Joseph Keriyo, the two were admitted with difficulties in breathing.
“The patients were ... resuscitated, their wounds dressed and they were given fluids to stabilise their condition,” he said.
Mr Keriyo said Phanice and Ruth shall be examined by a reconstructive surgeon.
Narrating the ordeal to The Standard, Ruth said Saka Achimba, an officer attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit, had been threatening Phanice, who was his lover before they split several weeks ago.
Phanice was in pain and too weak to speak.
Ruth said Mr Achimba visited Phanice’s shop on Saturday at around 6.30pm and asked where she was. At the time, Phanice had gone to buy supplies in Nakuru town.
Death threats
Achimba allegedly took Phanice’s mobile phone and left the premises, threatening to kill her. Ruth said the matter was reported at the Bondeni Police Station.
She said Phanice had turned down Achimba’s overtures.
At around 8pm, Achimba went back to the shop, carrying petrol in a jerrycan. He allegedly shut the shop’s doors behind him and doused the sisters with petrol before setting them on fire.
Nakuru Town East Deputy Commander Phanton Analo said Achimba is being held at Nakuru’s central police station.
“A probe was launched when the crime was reported. The officer is being interrogated,” he said.
