Baringo Senator Gideon Moi opened up about his father's health condition on Friday, December 20, 2019.
Speaking while presiding over Kabarak University's 15th Graduation Ceremony, he acknowledged that Mzee Moi, had been struggling with his health, but that he was on the road to recovery.
“I wish to thank each one of you, on behalf of my family, for your prayers. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for praying and thinking of Mzee Moi at this time, as you all know he is not in the best of his health,” the senator spoke.
Moi urged the gathering to continue remembering Mzee Moi in prayer.
The retired president, who has been in frail health, was admitted to The Nairobi Hospital on November 7, 2019, and when his health improved, he was discharged to recuperate at home.
On November 11, however, he was readmitted to the same hospital for what his Press Secretary Lee Njiru stated was a routine check-up.
“He is in a VIP wing, a homely setup, to facilitate continual checkups and necessary treatment. I appeal to the press fraternity not to cause unwarranted alarm by exploiting the credulity of the masses,” he announced then.
Njiru added that Moi was alert and being attended to by a professional medical team led by his long-time personal physician David Silverstein.
It remains unclear whether Mzee Moi is still in hospital or is recuperating at home.
Moi, 95, served as Kenya’s second president for 24 years after taking over from Mzee Jomo Kenyatta after his death in 1978, retiring in 2002.
