A Chinese national caused a stir in an Eldoret court after pleading with the magistrate to release him on bail so he could go and take care of his eight-month pregnant Kenyan wife.
Chen Hua who was arrested in Eldoret's Kapsoya estate a fortnight ago, was arraigned and charged with being in the country illegally
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Menya on Tuesday, August 27, Chen pleaded not guilty to the charges and asked the court to grant him bail so that he could go help his expectant wife, People Daily reported.
Chen who did not have a lawyer, told the court there was no one else to look after his wife whom he noted was in danger considering her advanced pregnancy.
Magistrate Menya directed that the suspect be remanded at Eldoret GK Prison pending hearing and determination of the case.
The case will be reviewed on Tuesday, September 11.
Chen is among a number of Chinese nationals who have been arrested and charged in the country for breaking the law.
In June 2019, the government ordered for deportation of seven Chinese nationals found doing businesses without legal permits.
About a week ago, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) nabbed two Chinese with 800 litres of methanol and over 3,000 litres of chang'aa and busaa in Athi River.
