A 37-year-old man from Namba Village in Suna West, Migori County committed suicide on Tuesday by setting himself on fire after his said-partner travelled to Mombasa to meet her ex-lover.
Joel Okoth ingested petrol before dousing himself with the highly flammable substance and then set himself ablaze.
The incident happened inside the house of his partner, who was away in Mombasa. She had stayed in the coastal city for one week.
A neigbour, Liz Akida, raised the alarm, when she saw Okoth’s body on fire, but attempts by other neighbours to access the house proved futile, given Okoth had locked the door from the inside.
Okoth’s brother, identified only as Fred, said his brother had differed with his lover, whom he [Okoth] referred to as his wife.
The woman had allegedly separated from her ex-husband, but the former pair reunited recently.
Fred says Okoth, who is married to two other women, resorted to committing suicide after his lover, 35, informed him of her desire to end their relationship.
Police found a petrol can inside the house, where Okoth ended his life.
Okoth’s body was taken to Migori Level 4 Hospital.
