Orange Democratic Movement party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna on Friday led sections of party youths to crack a whip of people suspected to be bribing voters in Embakasi South constituency, it has emerged.
The party's Director of Communications Philip Etale said a number of people were arrested by ODM team and handed over to the police for allegedly engaging in voter bribery.
"ODM SG @edwinsifuna and party youths have arrested some guys in Embakasi South bribing voters at a polling station in Kwa Njenga. They have handed them over to the police," wrote Etale.
According to elections Act, bribery is an offense and can cost victory of a candidate if convicted in the court of law. In fact, in the ongoing Ugenya by-election, Chris Karan lost his seat due to bribery allegations.
On Tuesday, both ODM team and wiper pitched tent at Embakasi South where they rallied behind Irshad Sumra and Julius Mawathe respectively. Mr Mawathe is defending the seat after losing in court.
Raila Odinga, the ODM leader, said he was confident that Mr Sumra would carry the day, adding that the former MP would help in the war against graft.
"Will you vote for Sumra? Are you ready for the race? We all know Sumra and I know he won't let us down. He will help the party in the fight against corruption when he makes it to parliament," he said.
On his part, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused ODM of insincerity in fielding Mr Sumra, arguing that under the NASA coalition, Wiper was to take Embakasi South constituency.
Should ODM take the Embakasi South seat, it will increase it's representation in the city to eight, one fewer than Jubilee. For wiper, the victory would mean that their only seat will remain intact.
