Kisii: Prefect beats student to death after finding him reading Bible at St Joseph Nyabigena Secondary

A Sombre mood engulfed St Joseph Nyabigena Secondary in Gucha South, Kisii County, after a school perfect allegedly beat his colleague to death, leaving the administration and entire school in shock.

The form three student was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to nearby Tabaka Mission Hospital.

According to report by Nation, the student collapsed after he was beaten up by a school prefect following an argument that ensued from on Tuesday 26, morning.

“The deceased was reading the Bible a few minutes to 7am. The prefect came in and after an altercation, he slapped and kicked him in the stomach after which he collapsed,” said one of the students.

The hospital administration declined to speak to the media, only saying that police were already investigating the cause of death.

County Police Commander Martin Kibet confirmed the incident saying police had launched investigation into the matter

“We are aware of the incident and we will allow detectives to carry out investigations before we conclude on what caused the death.”said Kibet

School Head teacher Mathew Simiyu disappered from the school shortly after the incindence and could not be reached for a comment

Teachers who sought anonymity told journalists that the head teacher addressed students asking them to remain calm before he left in a huff.

They accused the management of giving prefects excessive powers to discipline other students.

“Let those responsible be held and questioned on the matter. It is unfair that a student is allowed to discipline other students,” said one of the teachers.

Students however, expressed their anger over the incident boycotting their lunch time meal as they protested around the institution.

Police from Nyamarambe Police Station interrogated teachers on duty over the killing but it was not clear whether anyone was arrested over the matter.
