Fresh details have emerged regarding the gruesome killing of Rongo University student, Sharon Otieno, and her relationship with Migori governor, Zachary Okoth Obado, who is now one of the key suspects in the murder.
The governor disclosed to the detectives that he was having meetings in Nairobi the day Sharon was killed and therefore could not have been at the crime seen at the same time as was alleged.
In his statement, Obado said he left his village home in Migori for Nairobi on September 2, about two days to the discovery of the woman's lifeless body in Kodera Forest.
According to the governor, he together with his wife and other family members arrived in the city at around 7pm and proceeded to his apartment in Lavington, Nairobi.
On September 3, the day Sharon was kidnapped alongside Nation journalist Barack Oduor, Obado said he left his Lavington home for a meeting at Jaffery Sports Club, Nairobi.
He said he then proceeded to have lunch with one Evans Ondiek and others in Lavington Mall. "I left Lavington Mall at 3pm and went for a meeting with Mama Ida Odinga at her home in Karen.
So according to Obado's statement to the police as reported by @ntvkenya 7pm news, the last person he meet on the day Sharon was killed was Ida Odinga. That meeting was at 7Pm— Fredrick Orindo (@Fredrickorindo) September 30, 2018
I arrived there at 5pm and left at 7pm to go back home," the governor told the detectives. We could not ascertain what Obado's alleged meeting with Ida, wife of Opposition leader Raila Odinga, was all about.
Far from the numerous meetings in Nairobi, the governor admitted he had an affair with the late Sharon and that the seven-month-old baby she was carrying was his.
His statement also revealed he had some disagreements with Sharon and one of the thorny issues was on the pregnancy. Obado alleged his lover wanted a marriage because of the baby but he was not ready for that.
He claimed he was nevertheless ready to take good care of both Sharon and the baby, a position that she was still not comfortable with.
Detectives were not persuaded by the governor's side of the story and went ahead to arrest him as one of the key suspects in the murder.
Obado was arrested on September 21 and locked up at Industrial Area Remand Prison pending determination of his bail.
