Former Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo on Tuesday morning died at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
At the time if his death, Gakuo had been serving a three-year prison sentence at the Nairobi Industrial Area Prison after he was found guilty of a corruption offence in May this year.
He was later temporarily released to seek medical treatment saying he suffered from "high blood pressure, hypertension and chest problems".
The 68-year old had been taunted as a possible deputy to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who had also named him Chairperson of the Nairobi Regeneration commitee before he was sent to prison.
His reign as Nairobi Town Clerk has been hailed for success in cleaning up Nairobi River and restoration of social amenities.
His legacy, however, was tainted by the irregular purchase of Sh283 million cemetery land in Mavoko area, which saw him become of the highest ranking officials to be sentenced to prison over corruption-related offences.
