Echesa Fights for 3 Guns Seized During Dramatic Arrest

Former Sports minister Rashid Echesa leaves a Jomo Kenyatta International Airport court on February 14, 2020.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has filed a lawsuit against the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) a day after they raided his home.

Nation was first to report that in the suit, the troubled politician is demanding legal action against the agency for revoking his firearm license.

Echesa is seeking to have his licenses reinstated and the seized items returned.

In the application that was filed before Milimani Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, the embattled politician argued that the items were confiscated during a raid at his home on February 13 and 15, 2020.

During past raids on his properties, DCI made away with several guns owned by the former CS as well as a number of cars including his Range Rover.

During the February raid, the sleuths recovered several guns and documents which were expected to help the agency build a case against the former CS.
They recovered a rifle, Ceska and Berreta pistols owned by the politician and 104 rounds of ammunition. The search was extended to the homes of three other suspects who had been arrested alongside the politician.

Echesa led detectives in the raid that last for two hours.

On Monday, March 2, the detectives returned to Echesa's Karen home where they sought to uncover more evidence as investigations continue into the Ksh39 billion fake arms tender scandal that saw Echesa arrested on February 13, just meters away from Deputy President William Ruto's Harambee House Annex office.

The detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit sought to access the home for almost one hour but were unable to do so and resorted to jumping over the fence.

A vehicle was positioned in front of the gate and the officers jumped over the fence one by one.

Five of his cars were taken away from his home during the raid.
