Police in Nyeri have arrested the woman who conned local boda boda riders KSh 100, 000 in a fake promise that they would meet Deputy President William Ruto.
Jane Wangoi was arrested on Wednesday, January 1, after the disgruntled riders reported the matter to the police upon realising they had been duped.
The money was to cater for their transport cost from Nyeri to the DP's Karen home and further print some T-shirts and shirts to be worn on that day.
According to the complainants, the trip was slated for December 31, 2019, but were astonished by the slow progress and reluctance of the suspect to give clear information on how they would travel to Ruto's place.
When they mounted pressure on her, Wangoi is said to have disappeared and only sent some unknown people to deliver shirts and T-shirts to the riders in a bid to awaken their dwindling hopes about the fake trip.
The messengers were, however, arrested, beaten and taken to the police station where they were detained pending further investigation.
Wangoi was too arrested later in the day and locked up for a day before she was arraigned on Thursday.
The suspect who appeared before magistrate Wendi Kagendo denied the charges and was granted a KSh 500, 000 bond.
The case will be mentioned on January on Monday, 13, 2020.
Nyeri residents were conned just a day after a similar case was reported in Isiolo where over 200 locals were tricked to pay KSh 2, 300 with a promise they would meet Ruto.
