Powerful Female Lawyer Behind Miguna's Return




With the anticipated return of firebrand politician, Miguna Miguna, on January 7, 2020, a barrage of lawyers have lined up to ensure his smooth entry into the country.

Among the advocates who successfully petitioned the government to facilitate the barrister's return to Kenya is a young accomplished Valentine Khaminwa, daughter to veteran lawyer John Khaminwa.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Valentine works has been working at her father's law firm, Khaminwa and Khaminwa Advocates, since 2015.

The accomplished lawyer studied at Oxford Brookes University in the UK, where she pursued an undergraduate degree in law, before pursuing an LLM of Law at the American University's Washington College of Law.


Valentine, between 2002 and 2007, worked as a legal assistant at the Centre for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Washington DC, and also as a UN independent expert on minority issues.

She has also worked as a contributing editor for the American Bar Association Journal and a compliance manager at Equal Rights Centre between 2008 and 2014.

From December 2014 to 2016, she worked as an attorney at Cooke Robotham LLC in Nairobi, Kenya.

She also professes expertise in the fields of international law, legal writing, litigation, legal compliance, international development, public policy, government issues, and international relations.

Valentine can speak five languages; English, Kiswahili, French, German and Shona.

Miguna, on January 6, 2020, expressed his gratitude to the barrage of lawyers who had helped him petition the government to facilitate his return to Kenya.
