Following the announcement that the cabinet had approved the renaming of Moi Day and Boxing Day, Kenyans took to social media to blast the government for what they termed as misplaced priorities.
Moi Day which falls on 10th October has been renamed as Huduma Day in line with former president Daniel Moi’s desire while Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day, a day to celebrate Kenya’s rich cultural diversity & heritage.
The ever-vocal Kenyan Twitter weighed in on the subject saying the move was not well thought.

Renaming public holidays.Even changing the internationally known & acclaimed Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day, is what keeps our cabinet up at night. They are doing a fantastic job. Brilliant thinkers.— Ahmed Mohamed ((ASMALi)) (@Asmali77) December 19, 2019
Kenya’s cabinet does not have the mandate to rename Boxing Day. Boxing Day is an international holiday. This move is meant to deny Kenyans another day during the year which they can celebrate their culture.— Mohamed Wehliye (@WehliyeMohamed) December 19, 2019

— Chege Juliet (@Juliejeid) December 19, 2019My question is, who asked for boxing day to be renamed and why? Instead of renaming what the people asked for this is the foolery they’re doing.Which country has a shortage of citizens? I’m done here🤦♀️ https://t.co/shZ2lV9NlN
