The arrest of Nandi Governor Stephen Sang became a hard task for police officers to execute when his supporters caused drama.
The governor had called for a press breifing at his office to justify why he had destroyed more than 2,000 tea bushes in some four acres of land, allegedly grabbed from the community.
After Governor Sang's presser, detectives tried to whisk him away and drama ensued.
Sang's supporters were determined to stop any attempts to arrest the governor and ultimately, the police had to lob teargas to disperse them.
He was bundled into a police vehicle and driven away from Kapsabet to Kisumu under heavy security.
Governor Sang supporters trailed their county boss all the way and camped outside Kisumu Central Police Station where he was detained.
Nyanza Regional Police Commander Vincent Makokha told journalists that the governor would be arraigned in court over the massive destruction of over 2000 tea bushes on Saturday.
“We have the governor of Nandi in custody because of the offense he committed. We are taking legal action against him,” announced Makokha.
“He is recording a statement and we will see what will happen after that based on the information he will provide us with,” he added.
The county police boss made it clear that the security forces were in hot pursuit of the governor over his role in the destruction of private property.
Governor Sang had spearheaded a team of his officials and residents of Ketchem-Kapteng area in storming the tea estate in question.
He then went on and aided in the uprooting of the cash crop in a move, he explained, was meant to repossess the piece of land allegedly grabbed from the community.
