
Ibrahim Ismail, a 20-year-old man who was found guilty of eating mango during the Islamic holy month of Ramadhan has received 40 strokes for the offence.
Ismail who was accused of eating while other healthy Muslims were fasting was found guilty by an upper Shariah court in Ringim local government area of Jigawa state, Nigeria.
The judge Safiyanu Ya’u, ordered he be flogged 40 times in a market square to serve as a deterrent to others.
Eating during the holy month contravenes section 370 of penal code law of Jigawa state.
The flogging exercise took place at Ringim market square after a court official read before the offence before the public.
Recently, Nabahani Usman who is the commander-general of the Kano Hisbah warned he would arrest adults caught eating in public during the Muslim fasting month.
He clarified those arrested will only be released when they provide proof of illness via medical report from a doctor that exempts such persons from fasting.
