Second safe deposit box owned by arrested suspect found

Barclays Bank, Queensway branch, located on Mama Ngina Street

One of the suspects arrested by DCI on Tuesday over possessing fake money in a safe deposit box has been confirmed as the owner of another box at the bank.

In a statement on Wednesday, Barclays Bank Kenya confirmed that Eric Adede owns a second safe deposit box with them.

"Following an internal review of our records concluded late Tuesday night, we identified another safe deposit box registered in the name of the same customer.

"We immediately reported it and subsequently handed over the box to the DCI," the statement read in part.

Zero-tolerance Approach

The bank statement added: "This is in keeping with our zero-tolerance approach to all forms of criminal activity and our commitment to assist with the investigation.

"Barclays Bank of Kenya confirms that it is actively assisting the Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following the arrest of a customer in relation to the possession of counterfeit foreign currency banknotes yesterday," the statement read.

DCI boss George Kinoti also nabbed a number of golden billions that were also found to be fake, hidden in the safe deposit box.

He also confirmed investigations are ongoing to establish how the syndicate operated.
