President Uhuru Kenyatta’s social media accounts have been temporarily suspended. This is according to Nzioka Waita, the Chief of Staff and Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit.
Waita explained that the suspension of President Uhuru’s handles was as a result of ‘unauthorised access’ and measures were being taken to remedy the situation.
“On account of unauthorized access to the official social media handles of H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta. All official social media handles for the President have been temporarily suspended to allow for the necessary remedial measures to be undertaken,” read Waita’s tweet.
This comes hours after a post appeared on the president’s Twitter page warning those engaged in corruption that they will not be spared.
The tweet read, “If you are corrupt we will fight you. You can be my brother or my sister or my closest political ally. I won’t be clouded by ethnicity or status in my quest to leave behind a united nation and I will continue championing for Kenya’s unity.”
Jubilee Party account
Is this incident isolated? Last year, Uhuru’s political vehicle, Jubilee Party, was allegedly hacked and overrun by bots.
The account was bombarded with marketing messages promising the party’s followers an opportunity to make over Sh30, 000 by signing up to surveys.
He is not the first president to lose control of his pages either.
In 2017, President Donald Trump lost his Twitter account for 11 minutes after it was unexpectedly disabled by a “customer support employee” working for the social media company.
Nzioka Waita’s announcement was, however, followed by comments from curious Kenyans as to what was really going on.
Here are just but a few;
Waita, let action be taken against those responsible. The first suspects should be those who have previously known or dealt with the credentials of State House or the President's social media handles.
