Pregnant Nairobi woman killed by husband after neighbours failed to respond to her distress call

Beryl Ouma.

Police in Nairobi are holding a man who allegedly killed his pregnant wife in Kahawa Sukari estate following a domestic brawl on the night of Thursday, February 21.

According to the area residents, the victim Beryl Adhiambo screamed for more than four hours after she was assaulted by her husband Laiko Osuri, now in custody.

Speaking at Neema Hospital, Beryl's father Douglas Ouma told journalists he received a total three call back messages from her while he was asleep.

He then woke up when the last message hit his phone and decided to call back but her phone went unanswered.

Minutes later, the husband phoned him to say they had had a small quarrel with Beryl, though he did not disclose that his wife was no more.

Early that morning, the victim's father received yet another call from the suspect's parents informing him his daughter was taken ill to the hospital.

"My daughter sent me please call me because I was asleep. I heard the first one and had to call back. Few minutes, her husband called and asked me whether I was asleep or not. He then told me they had fought. When I prodded him further, he refused to tell me what transpired," he said.

Neighbours confirmed the two lovers had a domestic disagreement.

"There was a lady who was crying in that house, so loudly and painfully that she was being beaten. We all thought that was a wife and husband fighting," recounted Walter, a neigbour.

According to Ruiru police boss James Ngetich, Beryl was dead on arrival at the health facility.

Ngetich also said the body had no visible physical injuries even though the suspect admitted to have hit his wife but did not think it could cost her life.

"We tried to ask what tools he used and said it was a belt. We fail to understand how a belt could kill someone," the police boss said.
