Court Grants NYS Suspect Ksh2 Million for Personal Expenses

A court ruling on Thursday granted former Youth and Gender Affairs PS, Lillian Omollo, access to Ksh2 million from her frozen accounts to cater for personal expenses.

Lady Justice Hedwig Ong’udi, in her ruling, went on to ask the embattled former PS to adjust her lifestyle pending the conclusion of her graft allegation case.

“There is a lot of room for her to adjust her lifestyle to fit into her current financial status given that there is high public interest in the money from NYS which led her to be charged with a criminal offence, and which cannot just be wished away,” she ruled.

Ms Omollo had filed a petition to the court seeking access to her accounts to cater for day to day expenses which she had listed down.

In the application, she was seeking to access Ksh6.8 million: KSh5.2 million would pay fees for her children, Ksh139,800 would pay fees for three of her dependents and Ksh219,000 would cater for six workers under her roof.

A further KSh150,000 would go to her elderly parents, Ksh102,079 would cover her monthly utilities including electricity, water, Wi-Fi connection, telephone, and DSTV.
The PS also disclosed that her overall car maintenance charges amounted to Ksh 449,000, with food, miscellaneous and a monthly loan payment totalling at Ksh 510,000.

Despite granting her access to the Ksh2 million, Justice Ong’udi declined her petition to unfreeze all her accounts, while her case entailing alleged looting of public funds was still pending.

The Assets Recovery Agency obtained orders freezing the former PS' ten accounts which allegedly received huge deposits between 2016 and 2018, during her tenure as the PS.

Omollo is among several suspects facing corruption charges in relation to the pillaging of public funds from the National Youth Service (NYS).
