A gold miner died on the spot while his two colleagues escaped death narrowly due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
The miners were trying to pump water outside Bukira mines in Kuria West sub county on Monday evening when the incident occurred.
January and February are regarded as the peak months for mining in the county.
The incident which is the first reported this year has left residents in shock across the Migori county gold belt.
“They had drained water from the mine when they entered. Those who were outside noticed something was amiss when the three failed to bring the ore to the surface,” Charles Mwita, a miner said.
Strapped with ropes, rescuers managed to pull the three bodies from the mine.
The two who survived were given first aid.
“The problem with carbon monoxide is that it is odourless and victims only realise something is wrong way after,” Mwita said.
Migori county police boss Joseph Nthenge confirmed the incident and said the body of the deceased was taken to Migori county referral hospital mortuary awaiting further investigations.
