Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand arrived in Nairobi Thursday evening for a serious of activities which majorly focus on promoting his brand and that of his sponsor.
“Touched down in Kenya, thank you for my welcome, look forward to meeting you all over the next few weeks,” the 40-year old tweeted on arrival at the JKIA.
Before setting off for the Kenya tour, the ex-England international opened a newly refurbished 3G pitch at Blackpool’s Stanley Park.
“I wish I could have played on this as a kid and that’s what it’s all about – giving kids a better place to come and play football,” said Rio told blackpoolgazzette at the function.
In Kenya, however, he will taking selfies and dancing with his fans, mostly youths, at Uhuru Gardens on Saturday.
Ironically the parent company of the sponsoring brand owns a Kenyan Premier League side Tusker FC and Ruaraka Grounds, which has been banned for safety and security reasons as the pitch is dangerously unplayable.
Rio will also be meeting some unspecified teams for the famous “soccer camps” where he is expected to juggle the ball a few times and dish out a few tactics just for the cameras.
The former West Ham man will also meet a Kenyan female referee, Tabitha Njoroge, who is a brand ambassador of the sponsoring brand.
