7 People Left Dead After Gruesome Accident

Police have confirmed that at least seven people have died after the matatu they were travelling in collided with a truck at Mlango Tatu on Eldoret-Nakuru highway.

The accident comes barely a day after two people lost their lives along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Athi River, Machakos county.
Overtaking
According to reports, the driver of the lorry tried to overtake at a corner which caused the tragic accident.
The injured were taken to various hospitals and the wreckage to a nearby police station.

The Kenya National Highways and Bridges Authority are currently expanding a section of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway for Sh500 million to make it a dual carriageway.
This is expected to reduce accidents on the 16-kilometre stretch.
A report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that 2,750 people lost their lives as a result of road crashes this year compared to 2,509 who died by November 21, 2017.
Statistics
Pedestrians lead the group with 948 having lost their lives while pedal cyclists are the least affected with 42 of them having succumbed as a result of road crashes.
A majority of accidents on Kenyan roads are attributed to careless driving where motorists flout traffic rules.

Riders have also been accused of causing accidents due to their laxity in ensuring safety during rides.
In November the NTSA Director General Francis Meja said the focus to keep drivers responsible on the roads would shift to Saccos after they threatened to impound vehicles to ensure they adhere to ‘Michuki rules’
