City lawyer Nelson Havi has offered to represent eight students of Ambira High School who have been arrested and arraigned in court for allegedly insulting CSs Amina Mohamed and Fred Matiang’i.
Havi, who is the managing partner at Havi and company advocates, condemned the government’s decision to arrest and detain the students, terming it as a transgression of justice.
He has called on Kenyans to assist his law firm get the contacts and identities of the parents and guardians of the besieged students.
Ukwala Law Courts
“We have offered to act for the 8 Ambira High School boys. If you know the identities and contacts of their parents or guardians, please notify us ASAP. We cannot have a high handed executive decision to punish children and a more than willing Court assisting in the transgression,” Havi said on his Twitter account.
On Monday, the eight minors were presented before Resident Magistrate Gladys Adhiambo at Ukwala Law Court in Siaya County, but did not take plea after the prosecution requested for seven more days to conclude investigations.
The state said prosecutors needed to travel to Nairobi to collect “exhibits”.
Ugunja Police Cells
The magistrate ruled that the eight students be detained at Ugunja Police cells until the case is heard on December 3.
The case attracted unusual government attention after President Uhuru Kenyatta said stern action would be taken against the students.
They had been captured in a video that went viral, hurling unprintable names against the two CSs - and bragging about their ability to cheat in the recently-completed KCSE exams.
