Slain Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno is set to be buried on October 19, at her grandfather’s place and the cost of her burial ceremony has ignited an interesting debate on social media.
According to Sharon’s Family, the burial ceremony is estimated to cost more that Sh1 million and therefore they are calling upon well-wishers to help them raise the money.
Elijah Opiyo, Chairman of the burial committee, explained that the costs might go even higher due to the large number of people who are expected to attend the ceremony in Homa Bay County.
The break-down in the million-shilling anticipated bills include; mortuary charges, cost of buying coffin, food and refreshments for mourners.
“We expect large number of mourners that is why we are calling on well-wishers to chip in to enable us have a dignified sendoff to our daughter,” said Opiyo.
Despite the committee outlining how the Sh1 million will be spent, a good number of Kenyans are not in agreement with the large amount expected to be used for the burial.

Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) expressed dissenting opinions on the debate surrounding the Sh1 million cost.
One user identified as Anthony Wahuma said “ Why should Sharon Otieno's burial cost a whooping 1m when the mother needs the the cash dearly ? Why do we make funerals expensive that could have been just average , instead of helping pple when they are alive/the living ?”

Another one added “Sharon's burial will cost one million, 1M. You might complain and say the cash is far a lot. Well, if you ask me? What sense does it make if you are buried like a dog and yet you made or earned over $1000 a week? But again Migori County fund allocation is Ksh 9bn”

“Why spend so much on a burial? Wasn't Sharon's mum begging for assistance in raising her kids? Won't the money be put into better use raising the totos”
