Senior pilot, Captain Joseph Kinuthia successfully commandeered the historic maided nonstop flight from Kenya to the US.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (5Y-KZE) flight KQ002 left Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday at 10:55pm East African Time and touched the ground at JFK International Airport in New York at around 6:25am on Monday.
Captain Kinuthia has flown over 25,000 hours and has worked for Kenya Airways for over 35 years now.
The 65-year-old has flown powerful and prominent individuals including retired President Daniel Arap Moi and the late Pope John Paul II.
Kinuthia, who hails from Murang’a, was chosen by the national carrier to fly the historic plane due to his flight experience. He has worked for KQ since 1978.
Joining him is co-pilot Eric Mbugua, assisted by Jobba Musa and Patrick Kipsambu as well as 12 flight attendants.
234 passengers among them a government delegation led by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma and outgoing American ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec boarded the plane that was flagged off by President Kenyatta at JKIA.
