Okoth Obado might be one of the most unpopular men in Kenya at the moment. Yes, he may have won the Migori governorship easily but that hasn’t stopped him for being vilified for his alleged involvement in the brutal murder of his paramour Sharon Otieno.
And that has meant that as his trial goes on for his alleged involvement, that he has become a guest of the state. That means he now spends his time in the pleasurable hotels that our government gives to prisoners/accused, namely our jail/prison cells.
When not in court or in hospital, Obado now calls his place of residence the Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi. And he now wants out of the enforced stay. According to his lawyer Roger Sagana, Mr Obado said he was hoping for the best when the High Court revisits his application for bond.
On Saturday, Mr. Sagana also explained that Mr. Obado was still admitted at the general ward of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Besides the argument that the prosecution’s case is weak, Mr Obado also cites medical grounds as the reason he should be given bond. Mr. Obado explained his medical issue and that it started in 2013:
TO MANAGE THE CONDITION, I HAVE BEEN UNDER SPECIAL CARE OF A MEDICAL DOCTOR BY THE NAME PROF ATING’A,” MR OBADO SAID, ADDING THAT THE CONDITION ADVERSELY AFFECTS HIS ABILITY TO STAND FOR LONG HOURS. SINCE MY CONDITION HAS NOT BEEN ATTENDED TO FOR THE PERIOD I HAVE BEEN IN CUSTODY, THE COMPLICATION AGGRAVATED AND I WAS TAKEN ILL ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2018. I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ADMITTED TO KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL AS AN INPATIENT AND MY CONDITION HAS NOT IMPROVED SINCE THEN.
But the prosecution is having none of that and have opposed his bond application saying. How will this turn out for the governor?
