The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has been summoned to explain the circumstances surrounding the death of 507 Kenyans in the past two months.
The Transport, Public Works and Housing Committee of the National Assembly wants Boinett to appear and explain mitigation measures he has put in place to contain the rise in the number of lives lost in road crashes.
Boinnet and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), director general Peter Mundinia are required to give parliament an account of actions taken to curb road crashes.
Pokot South MP David Pkosing, who chairs the committee, argues that traffic police, KeNHA and NTSA had done very little while more lives are being lost in road accidents.
"The inspector-general of police and the director- general at KeNHA should come here and tell us why this is happening,” stated Pkosing.
He faulted the creation of the traffic commandant's office claiming that the office bearers have no command over traffic officers other than collecting data.
According to an audit carried out by the committee, at least 507 Kenyans have died while thousands sustained injuries between July and August.
Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi blamed KeNHA officials and accused them of sleeping o the job. Mulyingi blamed the authority for the accident that left 10 school children dead in August this year.
He, together with KeNHA officials identified hotspots in the area and agreed to fix speed bumps, signage, and guard rails but these were overlooked just days before the accident.
