US Pop artist Selena Gomez has called out President Uhuru Kenyatta in a video for making empty promises in the education sector.
In a video posted on her social media account, she reminds the president to improve the state of education in the country. This is after she silently made a visit to the country to follow up on the promise President Kenyatta made in 2018 at the Global Citizen Concert.
He said in a video message that funding for education in Kenya will be improved from 17% to 30% of the national budget. This promise, however, was not kept as the Ministry of Education was only allocated Ksh 473.4 billion of the Ksh 3 trillion budget (only 15.4%).
This year I pledge to you that in Kenya, our education budget will be closer to 30% of our total budget, making it probably the highest on the African continentPresident Uhuru Kenyatta
After making her silent visit to the country, Selena Gomez noted that poor families and marginalized communities are yet to have proper access to education. She now urges the president and the Ministry of Education to keep their pledge and ensure that every child has proper access to education.
President Kenyatta, at the Global Citizens Festival in South Africa, promised to increase spending in education from 17% to an impressive 30% of the national budget, but we haven’t seen progress or received an update on this yetSelena Gomez
