Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been summoned before a Voi magistrate court on Wednesday, December 18.
We have learnt that Sonko is set to face charges of assault following his dramatic arrest on Friday, December 6.
The directive to have the governor present himself before the court was issued by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) which received files relating to the case from Voi based police, KTN reported on Saturday, December 14.
Sonko allegedly assaulted Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub during his encounter with the law enforcers at the Ikanga airstrip.
"During the arrest, he became abusive, rude and violent in an attempt to resist and obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties.
In the progress he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment," read a statement issued by National Police Service Spokesperson Charles Owino on Saturday, December 7.
On Thursday, December 5, DPP Noordin Haji had directed that the governor be arrested in connection with the loss of KSh 357 million.
On Monday, December 9, Sonko was arraigned at the Milimani anti-corruption court where he was charged with several counts of graft. He was arraigned alongside other City Hall officials and pleaded not guilty.
He was released from custody on Wednesday, December 11, after posting a KSh 15 million cash bail.
The court, however, restricted his access to the office until his case is fully heard and determined.
