President Uhuru Kenyatta will today launch the SGR Phase 2A.
The Nairobi – Naivasha line has cost Sh150 billion to build, owing to the terrain and the need for long tunnels and bridges. About 7.15 km of tunnels and 29 bridges were built.
Passenger services will commence on Wednesday, with cargo services starting at a later date. Kenya Railways has already released a schedule for the stations between Nairobi and Suswa.
Fares will range between Sh50 and Sh200 for economy, and up to Sh650 for first class.
Unlike the launch of the Mombasa – Nairobi line, this phase has not seen much pomp and colour. Perhaps because it has been dubbed the ‘line to nowhere’, owing to the fact that China has not committed itself to funding the remaining section on wards to Malaba.
However despite not receiving the ‘Madaraka Express’ treatment, the quality of the work is commendable. Just like with the first section, the stations on this one are stunning.
Here are the four passenger stations, namely: Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Maai Mahiu and Suswa.
