A bus driver arrested with Embu secondary male and female students drinking alcohol has been jailed for six years.
Stephen Mwendwa's bus was impounded after being found hidden in a shopping centre with students from Siakago Boys and Thingingi Girls.
They were in possession of alcohol and muguka stimulant. Mwendwa will avoid jail if he pays a Sh105,000 fine.
He faced five counts and pleaded guilty before Embu senior resident magistrate Jean Ndengeri.
The father of three was detained after members of the public alerted the police after they sighted the bus parked in a back street.
Police impounded the bus and upon ransacking the schools' bags they found alcohol, cannabis and muguka.
Mwendwa was charged that on October 24 at Kiambuthi bypass area along Embu-Kiritiri road was found driving the bus without the driver's PSV uniform.
Count two stated that he violated the Road Service License by operating the bus along Embu-Kiritiri road rather than the Nairobi- Allsops - Karibangi - Dandora route as authorized by the NTSA.
The third offence stated that Mwendwa drove the bus with seven defective seat belts, missing windows and door locks and without a valid speed governor.
Mwendwa pleaded with the magistrate to spare him, saying the students requested him to stop to allow them to buy snacks in a supermarket. He did not have control over what they consumed, he said.
