Citizen TV caused a public uproar on the night of Monday, October 28, following its damning report about the prevalence of cancer in the country.
The broadcaster, in the special report by one of its anchors Nimrod Taabu dubbed 'Cancer Country', exposed how the country's treatment structures favoured the rich at the expense of the poor.
Picking on Kenyatta National Hospital, the best public hospital providing treatment for the illness, the report showed that the facilities were not adequate.
Seeking the same service in private hospitals, continued Citizen TV, would cost a patient three times more than they would have paid at KNH, which disadvantages the poor.
KNH alone has reported receiving more than 50 patients per day despite the lack of proper digitisation of its records.
This revelations seemed to anger Kenyans who blamed the state for the current predicament affecting millions of Kenyans whether directly or indirectly.
"When it comes to money to do Huduma Namba, Census, and Referendums money is easily available but the same government cannot protect its citizens from diseases. Failed Nation!" Wondered Evanson Mutisya.
"Funny how the government keeps on talking about Kenya having attained UHC yet millions of people still lack access to basic health care due to cost associated problems," added Yvonne King'ori.
"This story about Cancer Country is very painful and heartbreaking. Until you find yourself in it is when you can understand the pain those people are going through," shared Wanjiku Mugane.
Some government officials like Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Laikipia Women Rep Cate Waruguru joined the conversation vowing to do something.
"Politics na matusi (and hatred) aside, what is your honest opinion in regards to the Cancer Country story... because this cancer is too much, more than HIV AIDS," Sonko asked his followers.
"I believe by January we shall be debating the Cancer Bill and am sure I will get the full support by the Members of Parliament as well as Kenyans. So sad to watch this," posted Waruguru.
