A boda boda rider from Rachuonyo East in Homa Bay County escaped lynching Wednesday after he was accused of raping his female customer.
The alleged rape incident happened at Jwelu Village in Ramula Location Tuesday night.
The suspect, Vincent Okoth, was badly beaten up by his colleagues at Kadongo Trading Centre.
The boda boda riders claimed Okoth’s action continued to spoil their already-soiled reputation.
Police say Okoth’s colleagues smoked him out of his hideout at the centre, where he had gone into hiding after allegedly committing the crime a few minutes to midnight.
Authorities further said Okoth had been hired by the young woman to take her to her boyfriend’s place.
Area chief Joshua Owiti said Okoth allegedly diverted his boda boda to an abandoned house at Jwelu Village, where he allegedly raped the woman, who had travelled from Narok.
After committing the heinous act, the suspect allegedly escaped on foot, leaving behind his motorbike.
Chief Owiti said they found the traumatised woman, who had raised the alarm, in the abandoned house.
The victim was taken to a Homa Bay hospital, where it was confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.
The suspect has since been arrested, and is being detained at Othoro Police Station, awaiting his arraignment once investigations are concluded.
