Weatherman Issues Warning Over Heavy Rains

The Meteorological Department, on Wednesday, released a statement warning residents of four counties to be alert over heavy rains and that may cause floods.

In the statement, the weatherman listed Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Southern part of Tana-River and Lamu as the potential risk areas warning residents of all the mentioned counties to be on the lookout for flash floods.

Residents were also warned not to walk or even drive in fast-moving water for their own safety.

According to the statement, south coast and off the coast should expect the heaviest rains up to 40mm from Thursday, May 23, 2019, for at least 24 hours and on Friday, May 24, will have the entire coastal strip experience heavy rains of up to 30mm.

“The rains are likely to be accompanied by strong winds and flooding in low lying areas near the coastline and other water repositories,” read part of the statement.

Due to the projection of the strong wind, the weatherman also advised fishermen in the coast, alongside all other marine industry players, to be on high alert.

The Met department requested people in listed counties and across the country to keep checking the media outlets for any other progress information on the same.

Kenya Red Cross also tweeted the document from the met department and also reassured Kenyans of their readiness in case of any eventuality.

This comes a few days after the weather monitoring body issued another warning.

On May 7, they had posted another statement on their Twitter handle warning residents of the coastal region of the impending floods brought by heavy rains and strong winds.
