Police on High Alert as Al-Shabaab Threatens Revenge

The National Police Service has set all police officers on high alert over the Ramadhan period in a bid to avert any terror attack that might be in the cookbooks.

The police service, on Wednesday, stated that it needed to ensure all Muslims were well secured as they undertook their prayer sessions and all other activities that pertain with the Holy month.

They also announced that Al Shabaab group had vowed to revenge on the death of the 50 Muslims worshipers that were killed in Christchurch, New Zealand hence the need for more vigilance

A statement signed by police spokesman Charles Owino noted that the police were aware that Al Shabaab has a history of attacking during the Ramadhan period.

“Al-Shabaab has a history of striking during Ramadhan and emulating global jihadist groups’ modes of attack. In the Ramadhan of June 2014 alone, 150 innocent lives were lost when Al-Shabaab fighters infiltrated the country and conducted heinous attacks in villages within Lamu and Tana River counties,” read part of the statement.

Owino, in his statement, also quoted that Islamic State, which is an ally to Al Shabaab, carried out the said revenge in April.
The police claimed that the spate of eight attacks against churches and hotels frequented by foreigners in Sri Lanka, where over 300 people were killed and 500 others injured, were all part of the larger terrorist revenge plot against the Christchurch attack.

The statement also revealed that enough police had been deployed to places they considered ‘areas of interest’ within the cities and also along the Kenya-Somalia border.

It further declared that the police were more alerts as churches were the more likely targets for the terror group.

The police further urged members of the public to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activities and individuals to security agencies through their toll-free lines: 999, 911 and 112.
