New twist emerges in Kakamega twins mystery

The case of two identical girls, who suspect they were separated at birth in 1999, will soon come to a conclusion after Kemri agreed to perform a DNA test to establish whether they are related.

Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo had made an emotional plea for a DNA test to put the matter to rest with both families.

Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri), expressed willingness to fund the DNA testing process.

DNA to happen

“This is a matter of public interest, and to bring it to closure for the interested parties Kemri will be willing to offer DNA services if requested,” Prof Sam Kariuki stated.

Richard Olukhakha and Rosemary Onyango, parents of Melon Lutenyo, took the girls a local health facility to determine their blood groups and was surprised to learn they were all O Positive, just like him.

Rosemary said she wants the DNA test done as soon as possible to dispel anxiety among the girls and help the parents know the truth.

Confronting reality

Meanwhile, Angeline Omina, mother to Sharon, said she was fearful about confronting the reality that Sharon may not be her daughter.

Sharon appealed to professional counsellors to come out and help them cope up with the new development in their lives.

“It is also our wish that before and after the DNA, we will get professional counsellors to help us cope with the outcome,” she added.
