Man Dies After Winning Ksh1K in Drinking Competition

A man from Mukosi village, Bungoma County died on Monday morning after winning Ksh 1000 in a drinking competition with fellow villagers.

Locals had converged at a bar on Sunday night at around 9pm when they started binge drinking in order to win the competition. The competitors were given five-liter bottles, which were full of chang'aa before the competition started.

Reports by Citizen Digital indicate that the competition later turned tragic after the 28-year-old died.

One of the village elders, Margaret Waswa, stated that soon after the competition, the man collapsed and some of the revelers opted to take him home so that he would go and rest.

However, other revelers fled the scene of the incident.

The man was confirmed dead on Monday morning and his body was moved to Kiminini Funeral Home in Trans Nzoia County.
Police are probing the matter.

In a report released by the World Health Organisation in 2018, four out of every 100 people who lost their lives in Kenya in 2016 did so as a result of alcohol abuse.

Use of illicit brews commonly referred to as "changaa" or "kumi kumi" remained predictably high, at 37 percent of all the alcohol consumed.

The report by the organization also stated that the overall burden of disease and injuries caused by harmful use of alcohol is unacceptably high.
