Caroline Mwatha’s husband speaks out following postmortem outcome

The husband of Caroline Mwatha, Joshua Ochieng, says his partner’s funeral plans have begun – and that he has shelved his quest to seek justice over what he had – earlier – termed as “brutal murder” of his wife.

An autopsy report released on Thursday, February 14 revealed that Ms Mwatha died from excessive bleeding as a result of botched abortion of a 5-month old foetus.

Ms Mwatha’s family had – prior to the postmortem – protested the then-police allegations that the human rights activist succumbed to an unsuccessful abortion conducted on February 6 at a clinic in Dandora.

Her father, Stanslus Mbai, said he was “unaware” of his daughter’s pregnancy.

Police said the deceased got pregnant by her lover, who is based in Isiolo, and – as a result –, she had opted to get rid of the unborn baby.

Ms Mwatha’s husband, Mr Ochieng, also expressed his doubts on the police statement.

However, following the Thursday autopsy report, Mr Ochieng, who works at Dubai-based firm Al Shaya as a logistician, says he is left with no choice but to “leave the matter to God”.

“The government has tabled its [autopsy] findings. I have no comment on that [postmortem report]. What I would say is we are now making arrangements to bury our loved one,” Mr Ochieng told EDAILY.

In an earlier interview with EDAILY, Mr Ochieng said he had “never” suspected his wife of cheating.

The father-of-two says he jetted back to Kenya last August, and spent nearly a whole month with his wife before returning to Dubai.

Following news of his spouse’s disappearance, Mr Ochieng returned to the country last Sunday.

The couple got married in 2005, and has two children together.

Caroline Mwatha’s body was found dumped in City Mortuary on Tuesday, February 12, with her family members saying she had cuts in the neck, abdomen and thighs.

At least six people, including Ms Mwatha’s alleged lover, Gitau Gikonyo, and said-‘quack’ doctors who administered the abortion, have been arrested in connection with her death.
