Man promises wife Ksh100, 000, then kills self after Christmas

A 24-year-old man from Osingo North Location on Suna East Sub-County in Migori County killed himself on Thursday night (December 27) over reasons yet to be established.

David Ochieng, a boda boda rider, returned home drunk after a long Christmas celebration.

Upon arriving at his home at 11pm, he told his wife “jokingly” that he was going to commit suicide.

While still arguing over his statement, Ochieng told his partner that she “shouldn’t worry about the future because his fellow boda boda operators will – on his burial day – give her Ksh100, 000 to start a business”.

Osingo North Location chief Odila Mwai said Ochieng also instructed his wife to donate all his clothes to the man who will “inherit” her.

Ochieng, thereafter, bolted out of the house without revealing where he was headed.

According to Chief Odila, Ochieng also informed his mother about his suicidal ideation. The deceased’s mother, however, “thought that Ochieng was pulling a prank on her”.

A few hours later, Ochieng’s body was discovered hanging from a rope tied to a tree a few meters from his matrimonial home.

The deceased was moved to Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary.
