The Kenyan parliament is known to have diverse representation, from the 23-year old Paul Mwirigi who became the youngest MP in 2017, to Nominated Senator Beth Mugo who is serving her fifth term at the age of 79 years.
There is also the unique case of the Moi brothers, Gideon Moi serving in the Senate while his elder brother Raymond Moi serves in the National Assembly, representing Rongai constituency.
Father and daughter
But one of the least known cases is that of a father and daughter, both representing different constituencies in Nairobi.
Kasarani MP Mercy Wanjiku Gakuya serves alongside his father, James Gakuya, who serves a neighboring Embakasi North constituency.
Lecturer
Before joining politics in 2017, Mercy worked as a lecturer at Kenyatta University.
She holds a master’s degree in Medical Physiology and a bachelors in Chemistry and Zoology (both from the University of Nairobi).
His father, Gakuya, is serving his second term as Embakasi North MP. He was previously a director at Makomboki Tea Factory in Murang’a.
