The tense diplomatic relations between Kenya and Uganda over the ownership of Migingo Island on Wednesday took a new turn after Interior CS Fred Matiang’i promised to protect Kenyans “by all means”.
In a rare and strong message, Matiang’i did not mince his words as he demanded that the Ugandan government respects Kenyans even as the boundary dispute is handled.
Local fishermen have constantly complained over arrest and torture meted out on them by the Ugandan military which continues to occupy the disputed island.

Matiang’i said he would no longer tolerate unfair treatment of Kenyans by the Uganda neighbors.
“Respect is two ways. You cannot be fighting us and you want us to give you peace. We will protect our people by all means.”
“A good neighbor does not disturb others and always embraces understanding. We will work day and night to ensure the safety of our people,” the CS said.
Despite a long history of warm diplomatic relations, the Migingo issue has become the strongest test of the relationship between the two neighboring countries.
In July, the Uganda army arrested and allegedly tortured three Kenyan police officers.
Hours after the July arrests, the police service, which also falls under Matiang’i’s ministry, responded by arresting 53 Ugandan illegal immigrants in Busia.
