Speaker Beaten, Another Impeached As Chaos Rock 3 County Assemblies In Nyanza

Speaker beaten, another impeached as chaos rock 3 county assemblies in Nyanza

Chaos was on Tuesday afternoon witnessed in Homa Bay, Kakamega and Kisumu County Assemblies in the Nyanza region.

In Homa Bay, the assembly sergeants were forced to save the life of Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo from the hands of irate MCAs who mounted on her with kicks and blows accusing her of being biased.

Ms. Ayoo was hit with chairs and bottles of water by some MCAs who were unhappy with how she was presiding over the House proceedings.

The speaker was accosted while reading a report from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party about changes in the county assembly leadership including the office of the majority leader.

This, however, did not go down well with a section of the MCAs, led by the current leader of majority Walter Were, who said the changes were not the original report from the party headquarters.

The sergeants hurriedly whisked away the speaker in the ensuing 30-minute chaos, but the MCAs still stormed her office where she had been hidden for safety and frog matched her back to the assembly chambers to adjourn the House officially.

In Kakamega, chaos erupted as MCAs impeached County Speaker Maurice Buluma and clerk Patrick Wafula for failing to approve their mortgage and allegedly using county funds for personal gain.

The MCAs first closed the offices of county assembly officials and moved to the chambers where they elected Kennedy Kilakwe as the acting speaker.

The arrival of Mr. Buluma in his office did not go well with the MCAs who stormed in and forced him out together with journalists who had arrived for a press conference.

The MCAs have vowed not to allow Buluma back into office.

In Kisumu, MCAs caused drama after they opposed a move by Kajulu MCA Roy Samo to chair the afternoon session as speaker.

The MCAs, led by Nyalenda MCA Joseph Opiyo Olale and Nominated MCA Linet Muga, argued that Mr. Samo is not a member of the Speaker’s Panel which consists of three MCAs who chair sessions in the absence of Speaker Onyango Oloo.

The MCAs engaged in a shouting match saying they would not allow the Kajulu MCA to chair sessions in the assembly, adding that they will move to court to challenge the move.

According to the MCAs, those sworn in as part of the Speaker’s Panel include Nominated MCA Linet Muga, Migosi MCA Victor Rodgers and South West Kisumu MCA Erick Agolla.
