Vitizen TV anchor Jacque Maribe has confirmed that her fiancé and co-accused Joseph Irungu alias ‘Jowie’ indeed shot himself in her house in Langata.
In a sworn affidavit presented in court, Maribe narrates how ‘Jowie’ got to the house on the night of September 19, 2018 where they both lived while she was already in bed before shooting himself on the chest.
Shortly after, Maribe states that she heard a gunshot sound in her closet area, before finding Irungu lying on the floor, with blood oozing from his upper left chest.
“….by the time, I had already gotten into bed. He then went to the walk-in closet. I heard a sound like that of a gunshot and jumped out of bed and found him lying on the floor. He had blood on his upper left chest area,” said Maribe.
“I panicked and ran back into my bedroom. I got my phone. When I turned back to the closet area he was not there…” she added.
In the statement that the Prosecution now believes will exonerate the TV anchor, Maribe further states that she got back to her room to seek help through her phone only for Irungu to rush outside to their neighbour Brian Kassaine’s house.
But even so, the Prosecution remains adamant that releasing the two on bail would highly interfere with investigations.
The affidavit states that Irungu lacks a fixed residence and was living at Maribe’s house which has been identified as a secondary scene of crime with the prosecution saying the two might interfere with the scene once released.
Prosecutors also claim Maribe is a media personality associated with persons of influence and her release might pave way for intimidation of key witnesses.
Appearing for the second time before Justice Jessie Lessit at the Milimani Law Courts the two however pleaded not guilty to the joint charge of murdering 28-year-old Monica Nyawira Kimani.
In the meantime, both Irungu and Maribe will remain at the Industrial Area Remand and Lang’ata Womens’ Prison respectively until the mention of the bail application case to be heard by a different court on Wednesday October 17, 2018.
Irungu has been in custody since his arrest on the September 25,2018 while Maribe was arrested on 0ctober 1, 2018.
