Disturbing details have emerged on the driver of the ill-fated bus that claimed 55 lives on Wednesday morning, along the Londiani-Muhoroni road in Kericho County.
In a report by Nation, the driver only identified as Lucas may have been fatigued or may have fallen asleep on the fateful morning, causing the accident.
The report said that the driver had driven the bus on Tuesday from Kisumu to Nairobi and arrived at 5 pm, before the return journey started at around 11pm.
The driver had no reliever to help him out in case he got tired as required by law, for long distance public service vehicles (PSV).
According to one of the survivors, the ill-fated bus was overloaded and some of the passengers sat on crates.
“The vehicle had hardly left the city when the driver was instructed to make a U-turn and go for more passengers being transferred from another bus,” read part of the story by Nation.
The survivor identified as Joseph Oponyo added that the bus was also over speeding and kept veering but their pleas were unheard by the driver.
This comes a day after the accident claimed 55 lives. Reports from police say that the owner of the bus Mr. Cleophas Shimanyula has so far been arrested, after the bus was found to have been operating illegally.
