Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has been asked to appear before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee over the loss of Ksh9 billion at the commission.
The Committee, led by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, summoned the chairman who is expected to be grilled next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The committee also revealed that it's giving the matter precedence after which they will publish the findings 10 days after the Chebukati hearing.
“A casual glance at the Auditor-General’s report shows a lot of money was lost. The public must be told what happened and why,” stated Wandayi stated during a presser.
He further added that it was the role of his committee to deal with such issues and that the commission should always be honest on issues raised.
Chebukati is among the current commissioners at the embattled body who are expected to appear before the lawmakers.
The other commissioners summoned are Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu.
Among the issues to be answered by the troubled chairman are claims that the commission awarded tenders to unqualified suppliers and paid for goods that were not delivered.
According to a report by Auditor General Edward Ouko, the commission bought data bundles worth Ksh127 million but only used that amounting to Ksh515,000.
The Chairman is also expected to shed more light over the acquisition of 42,927 presidential ballot boxes at Ksh2,500 instead of Ksh2,250, as well as the mismanagement of nearly 1,000 modems fully loaded with data bundles.
